PREY (2022) Breakdown | Easter Eggs, Hidden Details, Making Of & Ending Explained
Prey (2022) Deep Dive: Naru's Primal Struggle and Franchise Continuity
Unlock the deep historical authenticity and primal horror of Prey by tracing Naru's journey as she redefines what it means to be a hunter within the Predator franchise.
Short Summary
- The film successfully rebooted the franchise by setting the story in 1719, moving away from modern military settings and exploring deep Comanche culture.
- The Feral Predator showcases a deliberately primal design, featuring a skull mask instead of a bio-mask, emphasizing its role as a technologically advanced, yet raw, hunter.
- Director Dan Trachtenberg steered the project toward a small, personal story with a limited budget, contrasting sharply with prior studio ambitions.
- Authenticity was paramount: nearly all crew and stunt teams were of indigenous heritage, complemented by a full dual-language Comanche dubbing option.
This breakdown investigates the creative decisions that elevated Prey, examining how Naru’s arc aligns with the classic Hero’s Journey, contrasting her tactical cunning against the Predator’s advanced, yet flawed, hunting code. Readers gain insight into the film’s evolution from early concepts through production hurdles, focusing on how it honors franchise lore while forging a fresh path.

What made this movie special is that it didn’t try to overdo it. It kept it simple. No reinvention of the wheel.
One thing I loved about her brother is that he wasn't the typical big brother who isn't actually as good as he act. He was a legit badass. Most people have to outsmart their predator to weaken it and get a little lucky in the final fight. He was straight up winning in a stand up fight until the predator cloaked.
Cloverfield series breakdown next? That'd be great especially with all the viral internet stuff they did to promote the first
I wish they would release this at the movie theaters for like a week. I definitely would check it out.
"This is as far as you go. No more. This is it" was an amazing line, especially later when Taabe looks to Naru to say, "This is as far as I go. No more. This is it." before getting killed was heart wrenching. This movie really was something special and hopefully one day we get the follow-up that was teased at the end of Killer of Killers.
This movie really took me by surprise how truly amazing it was. Native American warriors vs an otherworldly warrior was a stroke of genius. I really liked the "cheater" line but is it really? We use camouflage to hunt. It's doesn't exactly make us invisible but it is what it is. Great review brother. Be blessed
The introduction of the predator to Naru was badass. Little did he know that she would be his downfall.
They did so good with the Comanche setup, I had tricked my 38 yr old brother into thinking it was a period western movie until the predator showed up killing the coyote.
I like how the director was thinking of naming one of the horses Chopper so that they could make a call back line to the original film but could never get it to work without sounding silly. Lol
