Former USAF firefighter here. Math skills are indispensable to calculate friction loss formulas, which determine the amount of water pressure lost from pump to nozzle through a given length of hose of a given diameter. In the case of a multi story building, a given amount of pressure is lost for each story of elevation. If the pump operator dials in too little pressure, you get an ineffective trickle from the nozzle, too much, and the nozzleman can lose his grip on the hose and nozzle, causing it to whip about and cause serious damage. I wouldn't want someone who couldn't make these calculations quickly and accurately on my crew. Just saying.
Yep. Antiwhiteism in the legal system… it’s everywhere
Hiring firefighters who cannot pass this test seems like a bad idea.
This is so outrageous - why do people think it’s more important to have DEI standards than it is to have firemen who are actually qualified???
As a FF, if you think this is bad, wait until you see the way the physical tests are bent for female apps
The real reason I'm not voting for Kamala is because... I'm voting for Trump!
I dont care if my house burns down, I don't even care if the pets are inside, i don't even care if I'm chained to my wife and children inside the house, all i care about is whether or not the firefighting team is diverse enough to truly represent the struggle of fighting fires. Nobody dies when you DEI.
Meritocracy is racist? What's wrong with making sure people are qualified for the position they are seeking?
I am from Africa and a cool new trick here is to call you the R word if you insist that your staff get to work on time. I don't try to educate or argue with them. I simple agree - yes, I am a R and get to work on time or you are fired. It takes all the power out of the word and ends the manipulation immediately. Don't fear this word so much. It means nothing these days.
My husband was born in Mexico and did not start learning English until he came here (legally) as a young man. He's been a citizen for decades, and while his English will never be perfect, he still passed the USDA Forest Service test 20 years ago and has been working as a fireman ever since. If he could do it, I should think that anyone educated in the US should be able to do it.
