Description

In this episode of Huberman Lab Essentials, my guest is Dr. Karl Deisseroth, M.D., Ph.D., a clinical psychiatrist and professor of bioengineering and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University. We discuss his experiences as a clinician treating complex psychiatric conditions and his lab’s pioneering work in developing transformative therapies for mental illness. He explains the complexities of mental illness and how emerging technologies—such as optogenetics and brain-machine interfaces—could revolutionize care. We also explore promising new therapies, including psychedelics and MDMA, for conditions like depression and PTSD. I used to think healing the mind meant fixing what was "broken" in me. But this conversation helped me see something deeper: our mind doesn’t need fixing it needs understanding. For years, I carried silent pain. Smiled in public, collapsed in private. Therapy helped, but I still felt like no one truly saw the inner storms. Until I stumbled upon this video. Dr. Deisseroth doesn’t just talk science he brings compassion into it. It reminded me that our mind is not the enemy. It's a messenger. And every symptom anxiety, burnout, numbness is the psyche’s way of whispering: listen to me. I paired this insight with the tools I found in Instant Deep Relief from Manifest Zen especially the body-based exercises that helped me feel safe in my own skin again. If you’re lost, overwhelmed, or quietly battling something no one sees… start here. Understanding is the first step. Healing follows.

The discussion between Dr. Karl Deisseroth and Dr. Huberman has to be one of the best podcasts I have listened to regarding brain science and the practical functioning of the brain and its many abnormalities and ailments. I can’t wait for Dr. Huberman to bring Dr. Deisseroth back for more discussions on brain science

Excellent interview. Mind related science is hard to quantify but this guy is a true professional and kept it neutral.

It's a wonderful conversation, regarding high functional ADHD, from my practical experience..outward they look bright but inside it will be a storm , I think it differs from person to person ..for a border line high functioning ADHD they just need ," positive words" , " validating words " ..any negative words will break them emotionally 😭😭
