How To Handle The Holidays (Full Episode)
Navigating Holiday Expectations, Family Stress, and Relationship Endings
Reset impossible holiday expectations by understanding common triggers related to family trauma and routine changes. Gain practical advice for navigating complex family meet-and-greets and deciding when to end a relationship before the festive season compounds the pain.
Short Summary
- Lower holiday expectations preemptively to avoid the feeling of being let down by idealized media portrayals.
- Prepare a communication strategy to meet your partner’s family, focusing on asking questions rather than oversharing.
- Recognize that regression and competitive sibling behavior are normal when entering familiar, high-pressure family ecosystems.
- End unhappy relationships before major holiday events to avoid compounding false intimacy and wasting money on unwanted gifts. This session provides crucial mental preparation for the heightened stress and emotional complexity that often accompanies family gatherings. Alex advises listeners to perform a “reality check” before the holidays, noting that manufactured perfection often leads to disappointment. The episode focuses on preemptive strategy for family encounters and tough personal decisions involving relationships that do not fit the idealized seasonal narrative.

Rule 101 of meeting someone’s family the first time: you ALWAYS ask if the family needs help in the kitchen/help setting the table/cleaning up.
Thanks for being honest Alex because this is needed for so many of us.
I have never liked November and December. Too much hustle and lost meaning of what's important. I'm glad I'm not alone ❤
It’s very difficult for people who are missing loved ones. It was always fun for our family but slightly depressing once my Grandma passed away. Now that my parents aren’t here it’s really hard. And then add on hosting people and unappreciative in-laws it just gets hard. I’m glad I’m not alone.
I'm 66, and I'm over it. Going out for Thanksgiving, because we're down to three people, and I'm opting out of the cooking and cleaning stress. Christmas is enough.
