Lucy Hale: Sober Doesn't Mean Boring (Full Episode)
Lucy Hale Details Her Path Through Early Trauma, Addiction, and Finding Authentic Self
Lucy Hale shares the rock bottom moment that spurred her sobriety journey and details how she learned to separate her authentic self from her on-screen characters. Readers gain insight into navigating massive career success while hiding deep personal pain, learning vital lessons on self-acceptance and boundary setting.
Short Summary
- Accepted early parental divorce chaos by striving to please everyone, leading to deeply ingrained people-pleasing.
- Early success in acting merged her identity with characters, using alcohol as an outlet to access suppressed "wild" energy.
- Achieved nearly two years of sobriety after reaching a point where she realized professional success meant nothing if she lost control of her life.
- Candidly discussed how addiction fueled disordered eating and created unsafe sexual situations due to a lack of personal boundaries.
This conversation provides a raw look at the internal landscape of a successful actress, tracing emotional voids back to sensitive childhood years in Tennessee. Lucy Hale and Alex Cooper explore the difficulty of deconstructing negative self-narratives, the cyclical nature of alcoholism and relapse, and the current journey of dating authentically while sober.

killed the entire episode with the White Claw Ad. Why did you think that was appropriate?
White claw as a sponsor for this ep 💀
Talking about struggles of alcoholism and advertising alcohol! ?!?!
You've got to be absolutely sh$tting me. A lovely episode on sobriety and you include an ad for White Claw! Not cool.
Lucy is so well spoken and has so much self awareness, her transparency and honesty is really refreshing. Such a great interview.
I resonated so much with how lucy said she always wanted a different personality growing up. I am also very introverted and growing up, I saw it as a weakness. It takes time to see it as a strength. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to be an introvert in Hollywood! Great choice for an interview Alex ❤
I loved this episode! but girllll as someone watching to get motivation for staying sober, a WHITE CLAW AD?!!! i’m sorry but no… you could’ve used ANYTHING else
Not the White Claw promotion 🤦🏼♀️
You killed this whole episode by promoting ALCOHOL in a SOBRIETY episode.
What I don’t like about Alex—and I noticed this while listening to various episodes—is that she always tries to relate to the guest whenever they share something. Usually, these are really, really serious things, like difficult relationships with parents or struggles with drugs, or something like that. Alex herself says that she hasn’t experienced these problems to the same intensity as her guests. Yet she still tries to relate. And I feel like she takes the spotlight from the guest and somehow turns it onto herself. You can also just let human experiences stand on their own without immediately relating them to yourself and making it about you.
