It’s funny how a lot of people are concerned with Luca and Alberto hunting other fish, but fish are cannibals, a lot of fish just eat other fish lmao Edit since y’all love to just disagree to seem smarter🥴: the same species of fish have eaten each other before, like that’s just nature sometimes. I’m not saying that it’s their only means of food, but it has happened before and it will happen again just due to hunger. Y’all need to stop lmao I’m shaking my head too much it’s gonna make my neck hurt🫠
I think this is one of the nicest queer depiction in movies. The metaphor of them being "monsters" who can't be seen among people, Luca projecting by calling Alberto monster after he shows who he is. and that line Lucas grandma said on the end. Plus song with peculiar meaning playing on the end. It's a real sweet movie with extra meanings
“You got me off the island” makes me cry 🤧
I really like Luca. It's gentle and heartwarming. Not all films need to be exciting or perilous.
At the very beginning, Luca mentions that one of the fish has swum away and will be "out there" somewhere. This was the fish that was seen in the post-credits scene after Luca's uncle had his monologue. This film could very well be understood as "coming out of the closet." Especially with Grandma's sentence: "There will always be people who don't accept him..." and Alberto's last sentence when he said to Luca: "You took me from the island"
I think this movie, at least vibes wise, reminds me most of the slow, low-stakes Ghibli films, i.e. My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and of course Ponyo. Combining magical realism with the experiences of growing up, going through changes, and making friends that makes you feel nostalgic for when you were young and everything seemed magical. I haven't seen many other "new age" pixar films, but I hold Luca dear to my heart, because it is the exact kind of movie I loved watching when I was young.
Can we appreciate how there's no drama about Giulia's parents being separated. It's just presented as completely normal in the story. She loves both her parents, her parents love her, and they've found a nice living arrangement their kid is well adjusted to.
On first hearing Luca speak, you say “It’s American!” That was intentional. All of the characters including the seamonsters are actually speaking Italian, but the seamonsters have an accent that the Portorosso residents perceive as “touristy.” To convey that, they cast American-English actors for most of the seamonster characters, and Italian-American actors for most of the Portorosso residents (including at least one of the Aragosta Sisters). The Paguros and their neighbors, in the English translation for us, greet each other with “Mr(s).” instead of “Signor(a),” and Luca greets his “Mom” and “Dad” and “Grandma” instead of his “Mamma” and “Papà” and “Nonna.” Contrast with the Portorosso residents who use many more Italianisms and Italian greetings for each other. Giulia and Alberto are sort of in-between (both voiced by Americans, yet both putting in some Italianisms) to reflect that Alberto’s (lack of) proper upbringing and fascination with the human world, and Giulia spending most of the year at school in Genova which is the capital city of the Liguria province (formerly its own kingdom before Italian unification, with its own language that’s sadly now largely extinct) and would be more cosmopolitan than a Cinque Terre village with a population of a few hundred tops. This is probably part of why the other kids wouldn’t befriend her nor team up with her for the Portorosso Cup (“… and everyone thinks I’m just some _weird_ kid who — doesn’t belong”) because they see her as a snooty big-city type. Likely the converse is true for her at school in Genova: maybe not as many friends as she might like because _they_ see her as a hick town girl.
Luca and Alberto's friendship feels so authentic because the director said he based their friendship on his with his own childhood friend who he is still best friends with to this day.
