For Carl is for Carl Sagan the famous astronomer and scientist who wrote the novel Contact that the movie is based on
Can't believe you cutaway from one of the greatest trick-shots in cinema...the flash back of Young Ellie running for her dad's medicine only for the camera to pull-back through the mirror.
It still blows my mind that this movie only received *ONE* Oscar nomination - and it was for "Best Sound." Nothing for cinematography, directing, special effects, adapted screenplay, score - and nothing for Jodie Foster! Just wild.
A bit of trivia... The radio telescope featured at the beginning of the movie is the Arecibo Telescope. In late 2020, it collapsed rather dramatically due to corrosion. There are several video angles of the collapse including that of a drone that was inspecting the failing structure. For those of us that love astronomy, it was sad to see the loss of such an iconic piece of scientific equipment.
I don't think they picked up when Ellie landed on the beach, it was the Pensacola beach that she drew with the palm trees in the background.
The opening scene represents how the radio waves leave the Earth, the latest waves sent out are more recent events whereas the farther out you go, you hear the first broadcasts sent out years ago...like going back in time audibly...
My dad was an extra in this movie. He died while fighting Lymphoma for the third time. This movie always brings back good memories, and stories of filming the court scene at the end, including him proudly boasting he got to wish Mathew McConaughey a happy birthday while on set. RIP pops <3
Actually the "clever girl" line was a reference to "Silence of the Lamb" Starring Jodi Foster.

I love the fact that the compass saved her from the chair that wasn't even a part of the design. Humans pompously insisted on it out of "safety". And the compass that was given to her out of love, saved her from the ignorance of man. Also, there are three parts in the film that shows the shape of Vega. The popcorn spilled by her father when he died, the grounds of sand in her hand when she picks up some on Vega, and the grounds of dirt she picks up on Earth.
