Essentials: How Humans Select & Keep Romantic Partners in the Short & Long Term | Dr. David Buss
Evolutionary Psychology of Human Mate Selection and Mating Conflict
Understand the universal and sex-differentiated criteria humans use to select long-term partners, and identify the evolutionary functions behind mating behaviors like jealousy and deception.
Short Summary
- Discover the universal traits valued in partners versus sex-specific priorities concerning resources and physical cues.
- Learn how sexual selection frameworks, including preferential choice and competition, shape mating dynamics across cultures.
- Analyze the evolutionary basis of darker mating aspects, such as deception, jealousy, and the impact of personality traits like the Dark Triad.
- Recognize that effective mate assessment requires observing partners under stress, not just relying on initial digital or brief interactions.
This episode details Dr. David Buss’s extensive cross-cultural research on human mate choice. It establishes the theoretical groundwork based on Darwinian sexual selection, breaking down what men and women universally prioritize for commitment, and how short-term needs influence preference shifts. Crucially, this framework helps explain the motivations underlying complex, often conflict-driven, behaviors in relationships.

Imagine having to become a master tactician in order to have a relationship in 2025. 😂
A host who listens. A host who refuses to inject his own two cents every other sentence. Now that alone make this a great episode. Such a rarity.
My darling hubby checks all the boxes. 50 years now. 😊
What matters to me is similar values, kindness and the ability to communicate needs and feelings.

Feeling bad today, came here to have some advice. Still feeling bad but more enlightened. Thanks big bros

Once you know and project you are a “good man” the need to be “nice guy” disappears. The best woman and mate for me suddenly appeared in my life and I told her without fear what I want with her. She was pleased to hear it and accepted willingly.
I want to be as locked in on basically anything as Andrew Huberman is in this interview.
That’s so true about voice and smell. Men can be the greatest and lovely and full of good qualities but these basic biological features are critical to feel comfortable and attracted to a man. And you cannot fake it or fall for a person just online
