Description

After a year and 22,000 miles, is the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail really the ultimate adventure SUV? We reveal its true cost, off-road capability, and a shocking resale value. We paid just over $72,000 for this brawny SUV with our own money, living with it day in and day out for 22,000 miles to see what it's really like to own. From the daily commute to tackling technical trails, we put this Lexus GX through the wringer. Let's start with the good: This thing is a phenomenal off-road adventure truck. Compared to rugged rivals, the Lexus GX 550 is cushier and way more comfortable, while that twin-turbo V6 engine is an absolute sweetheart. It handled sandy washes, steep hills, and everything in between without breaking a sweat. Plus, we experienced rock-solid reliability — our truck dodged the V6 engine recall, and our routine maintenance was easy and completely complimentary. But it's not perfectly polished. If you're expecting a plush, traditional luxury ride, you might be disappointed by the bouncy freeway manners. You also have to be prepared for the price at the pump; we averaged just 17.1 mpg, and premium gas gets expensive fast. We also had a few gripes with the interior tech, specifically the permanent climate control row taking up valuable screen real estate. So, what's the final verdict on the 2025 Lexus GX (and our 2024 model)? It all comes down to value. We were stunned to find that after a full year, our GX only depreciated by about 5%, with an appraisal of $68,000. It's one of the best investments we've ever made. Despite the GX's thirsty engine and truck-like ride, everybody in the office wanted to grab the keys to this one. If you want unmatched utility and charm, this Lexus is hard to beat. The reason it commands so much on the used market is because it is produced in very limited numbers intentionally and the dealers were marking them up $10k plus. I’m not sure how Edmunds was able to buy one at $72k unless they got preferential treatment by being Edmunds, because no way in LA could a regular person get one at that price. Edmunds did not have a problem with the hood wobbling at speed?

We tested our Lexus GX 550 Overtrail for 22,000 miles on dirt, rocks and just a bit of pavement and found it could conquer all. After one year of ownership, the GX's resale value only dropped $4,000. Are you surprised? Let us know in the comments below!

I bought the ‘23 GX 460, the last year of the V8 for that reason. It was also over 10k cheaper, and the resale for ‘23 V8 will always be there. I also bought the ‘21 Toyota Tundra, the last year of its V8. I’ve always bought a vehicle by its engine. I just sold my ‘93 Dodge 5.9 Cummins for what I paid for it, 35 years later.

This feels a lot more like a support ad than a year-in-review…like an opportunity to help Lexus out by addressing every single question mark that this car has - in order - by finding a different face to say “I actually loved this exact thing about this vehicle” or “the thing that people complain about was never an issue for me in exactly the same circumstances that it has been complained about”. This video should probably have been rounded out by the guy whose videos this one keeps calling back to.
