3rd Interstellar Comet Just Formed a Bizarre Tail and More Updates
Interstellar Comet 3I/Atlas: Latest Observations on Age, Activity, and Origin
Analyze the latest six weeks of scientific findings regarding the interstellar visitor 3I/Atlas. Discover why this ancient comet challenges standard models of solar system dynamics and composition.
Short Summary
- Age and Origin Revealed: Evidence suggests 3I/Atlas is the oldest comet seen, potentially 7.6 to 14 billion years old, originating from the Milky Way's old Thick Disc population.
- Extreme Activity Confirmed: The object shows surprisingly early and intense outgassing, including water vapor far sunward of typical sublimation zones, pointing to pristine material.
- Chemical Composition Puzzles: Initial observations lack expected volatile compounds like cyanides, suggesting low metallicity or a thick organic surface layer.
- Unusual Tail Dynamics: Scientists observed an unexpected sun-facing dust bloom alongside a standard eastward tail.
This report summarizes recent, unusual observations of 3I/Atlas, the third known interstellar object. The data, gathered rapidly over the last six weeks, focuses on its unique trajectory, extreme age, and surprising chemical activity, offering a rare glimpse into distant planetary formation processes.

I’ve seen enough. Cue the Independence Day soundtrack.
Hello Wonderful Comet
Juno's mission will end next month. We should use it to observe 3I Atlas during its flyby instead of just crashing it into Jupiter!
The "thrusters are on" comets were funny to read but in reality, many comets in the past exhibited a dust plume that emitted stuff from the heated, sunlit surface without turning into an Independence Day movie. Most recent example is C/2014 UN271 (Bernardinelli–Bernstein) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C/2014_UN271_(Bernardinelli%E2%80%93Bernstein) As far as I know, no Will Smith was needed for that comet either. This seems to be common for pristine comets that almost never interacted with the Sun and seems to involve stuff like ammonia and co2 evaporating when facing the sun
“Ack ack ack.. don’t run, we are your friends.”
Build interceptor probes for future interlopers already! We’ve got intergalactic objects to study up close.

*camera zooms in, fear on face, moody colored lighting* "They're here." *thunder crackle*
Aliens: "I think it's about time we..." Anton: "No."
A lot of information for something we've only known about for a very short time
