One of the most profound things I heard about money came from the actor Chris Rock of all people… he said “being wealthy isn’t about having money, it’s about having options.”
I personally think the title of this video doesn’t match the content because I believe this shouldn’t be the “#1 money rule to live by”. Yes, she had good advice on how to utilize fear to motivate you to find solutions in your situation, and maybe if your ultimate goal is to only grow financially and ignore other values in life it wouldn’t matter if you make that your priority. But as for me I wouldn’t want to constantly focus on my fears to find my drive, I’d much rather find my positive purpose that would energize me to work everyday. She says to go to the “dark place” and imagine what you would do to find the solution- I don’t think this is good advice for some who already am in a dark place too often it’s like encouraging more negative fear mongering instead of spreading positive thinking like the law of attraction or mindfulness or something… It would’ve been more helpful if she had focused more on the balance of dealing with fear and optimism rather than only fear itself and telling people to “figure it out” 😳 basically the title is clickbait lol
its hard to put into words, but the book hidden manifestation completely changed my life and it's not new age bs
I remember when I first graduated from college and just had my child, I was laid off from my first job. There was nothing in the deteriorating small city for me. I had to decide between coffee and bagel for breakfast since I did not have money for both. Then I decided to leave the city and went to New Jersey and then California and things just gradually turned around. The thing that helped me through the fear is I can always work and I can always earn money, big or small, and therefore I will never really starve.
My dad used to say 'money doesn't grow on trees' and 'I'm not Rockerfeller." He would tell us how as post war children they ate sugar on bread. Scarcity mindset was always present - and yet I have never thought that I am going to be without or 'poor' - because I was always able to work multiple jobs. The jobs made me feel that spending was okay - and spending made me feel good. The thing is as you age, you may not have the physical capability to keep working harder - so we need to learn to work smarter - sooner. Not enough women are taught how to do this.
Wow you brought tears to my eyes with the word, “power”. Even though I made money rented a house. My husband controlled it. I would buy my daughter a dress. If it was $30.00 I would say it was $15.00. As I had 2 girls and they would each get to wear it. I did hide the packages. My daughters grew up with me saying this only cost this much. Otherwise I would be in trouble. Even much later I was giving him my money and it left me with basically none but I could save. I bought my daughter a laptop for school that was one of the biggest fights. That’s when I stood up and said no it’s my money I’m investing in her future. Thank you.
My life is so much bvetter since I listen to you everyday ! Thank you Mel for existing !
I love that she gave us permission to stop pretending we are fearless. I think that locks us in to these counterproductive situations and then we hate ourselves.
I was expecting more specific examples how to deal with money fear.
Farnoosh, thank you.....I met you at a writing workshop in downtown NYC years ago, we went to find lunch on a break. I just watched this entire conversation and I feel so much relief. I didn't realize that my fear of losing my money was a conversation I was having with myself everyday. Now I know why and why it's normal. You communicate beautifully.
