Once heard Mike Tyson say this and I never forgot it: "I had to learn self love, and that's what discipline really is. And discipline is doing what you hate everyday & doing it as if you love it, because you know it's good for you."

I cannot live happily without (what most people would consider) strict routine and discipline. I cut out alcohol and processed food, OMAD, regular training, up at 4:30am, 6-7 hours sleep cycle. It gives me consistent positivity/happiness, whatever sh*tshow that is going on around me. The lifestyle sacrifice (subjectively) is no social life or short term dopamine rushes, but it’s a good trade off for me personally, at this point in my life.

I ask myself: "What experience do I want to have in my life?" and then look at the truth of what I need to do to accomplish that. That becomes a story I can tell myself with "self love" when I lack motivation, which works over time.

i remember the first time i heard the saying "discipline equals freedom", i got it. to me, it meant if you're disciplined, you're free to do whatever you want to do; you're not victim to your biggest obstacle, which is the lusts of your flesh. i was explaining to my daughter how the flesh only wants to do things that are bad for us; sleep when it's time to wake up, stay up when it's time to go to bed, watch tv when it's study time, eat that doughnut, etc. discipline is easier if you understand that it's a perpetual fight; a deliberate effort to keep your flesh from destroying you. once you've exercised discipline so many times, it becomes a habit, which is an even greater freedom.

Something to be weary of is confusing discipline with rigidity. Discipline grants the ability to follow through with a structured approach to achieve goals, but sometimes the structure needs to change. Don’t become attached to the structure itself.
