One of the biggest failures by the Academy was to deny this film, it's actors and crew their awards. This film is a masterpiece.
Spielberg didn’t want to do the movie at first because he was afraid he couldn’t handle the depth and cultural significance of the story and thought it should be a black director instead. Quincy Jones talked him into doing it. They sought Spielberg out because they specifically wanted him to direct it and no one else. He worked closely with the cast to make sure the depiction was culturally accurate and appropriate.
Shug stopping Celie from killing Albert was because Shug didn't want her to go to jail over that man. It would only have made her life worse; we saw how bad off Sophia was when she came out, and she can can handle herself.
Oprah named her company Harpo for both reasons. Her name being Harpo backwards was one of the reasons why she felt she was destined to play Sophia in this movie.
An interesting thing I’ve noticed with these reactions is that the reactors don’t seem to pick up on the fact that Celie doesn’t know Mister’s real name. She hears it for the first time when Shug comes to visit, so that’s why she repeats it in awe a couple of times. All these years and she only knows him as Mister.
Danny Glover was put through agonizing emotions for this movie. When the sisters are torn apart Spielberg told the actresses, Akousa and Desreta, 'Don't let go of each other; Fight to get back to each other.' and told Danny 'Do everything to keep them apart.' The part where he hits their hands was the worst feeling. He kept apologizing to the girls and had to take a minute to calm down. I'm sure it broke him. I'm glad he got a semi good ending.
I read the book so I knew exactly why Shug had Celie so giggly 😂🤭
Shug and her dad didn’t have a incestious relationship. They just had a strained one cause Shug was considered a lustful and improper woman. And it was this big shame cause she was the daughter of a preacher
I sob my soul clean when i watch this movie. Im emotionally wrecked for 3 or 4 days.
