Might be before your time, but do you remember what President Reagan did? Air traffic controllers went on strike. He told them to go back to work due to safety issues. They refused. He fired every single one of them. The military took over for a bit until new controllers were hired.

As a retired 30-year airline pilot and 12-year Air Force pilot, I can confirm The ongoing problem with air traffic control. In the DCA crash, both parties were culpable. The use of visual separation, especially at night by commercial aircraft should never be allowed in controlled airspace. It is used especially by controllers to offload the responsibility for separation onto the pilots. Pilots in turn due to many factors willingly accept it. It happens everyday all over this country. Especially at the bigger hubs. I challenge any pilot to be able to differentiate different aircraft types, altitude heights, and other things at night or reduced visibility. As a union representative dealing with air traffic Services, we tried to ban the use of these procedures but the controllers and their Union fought us all the way. It is forbidden at most foreign airports for commercial traffic. Yet in this country it is still allowed in order to reduce staffing requirements as well as increase traffic capacity. No surprise that this happened, especially at DCA. The East Coast airports are the most crowded, complex, and worst offenders of this. . As an instructor pilot and as a captain, I refuse to accept visual clearances at night. Too much risk for too little gain. Controllers are paid as professionals to provide separation. The fact that they are allowed to continue this practice, the FAA management should be criminal.
