Strange GRB Discovery: Analyzing Unprecedented Activity of GRB 250702B

Discover why the recent GRB 250702B radically challenges decades of astrophysics knowledge regarding stellar death, offering three competing explanations for its bizarre multi-day, periodic behavior.

Short Summary

  • GRB 250702B lasted an entire day and exhibited confirmed bursts repeating multiple times, an unprecedented feature inconsistent with standard GRB models.
  • Astronomers detected X-ray activity 10 hours before the first gamma-ray trigger, indicating a slow buildup occurred.
  • Current leading theories suggest either a highly atypical stellar core collapse or the destruction of a White Dwarf via an Intermediate Mass Black Hole.

This discussion breaks down the nature of Gamma Ray Bursts, analyzes the strange multi-trigger event of GRB 250702B, and reviews the exotic explanations scientists are considering to solve this cosmic puzzle.

Sure, you can calculate estimates of the amt of energy involved in these. But the numbers become so large they are truly unimaginable. Incredible.

@1:47 look how fast the neutron stars are orbiting each other, it takes about 6 or so milliseconds for a full rotation. These stars are the size of a city, each with a mass greater than the mass of our Sun, whipping around each other _over 100 times per second_ and faster just before the collision.

I find gamma ray bursts to be one of the most interesting things in the universe to learn about! Thanks Anton! 😊❤
