Fully agree with this. Also there is something that I really disliked and no one talks about it. Malcolm was always about a working-class family struggling to get by. Inequality wasn’t background, it was a big point. The finale even reinforces how people like them work the hardest and are constantly overlooked, which is why Malcolm succeeding mattered so much to Lois. But in these new episodes, that’s gone. The house is perfect, there are no financial problems, and they’re throwing a huge, extravagant party. It feels disconnected from what the show stood for. Removing that struggle removes most of the social commentary and its a big part of what made the show meaningful in the first place.
I just don't think it was needed. The original was just too good, and making a modern one is just unnecessary.
Honestly, the maturity thing is kind of a double-edged sword, since their wacky crazy hijinks work well as rebellious kids but would just seem weird and off-putting and even a little sad coming from adults. Even the YouTube channel thing just seems kind of icky when it's a guy in his forties fucking around with his seventy-something father.
I felt not any of the brothers have any storyline or connection in this series as if they don't even care of each other it was sad..
Like Dewey once said: I expect nothing, and I'm still let down.
I think the revival made me realize what a product of the early 2000s the original was. As for the aspects that some are using to perpetuate culture war nonsense: while I did notice the addition of those things, it felt especially plausible that Malcolm would become one of those guys that would learn therapy language and be absolutely insufferable about it. I thought making the youngest nonbinary was clever, considering the running gag in the original of not revealing their gender. Those things, I thought, were handled as well as they could have been. The OG series began in 2000 and was, at its core, about looking past the polished image society was cosplaying in and exploring the rot under that surface. That illusion no longer exists, and I think a huge problem with the revival is that it tried to reconcile adding modern references, with pretending society at large hasn’t been reduced to a point where Hal and Lois are now considered well off simply because they own real estate.
They did the smart decision to have this as a miniserie instead of multiple season revival.
Another nostalgia cash grab that wasnt needed.
I like how the main character looks just exactly like the original kid did.
