My defining moment...I was an assistant manager at Walmart in the 80s. As I'm working a 36 hour shift (yes, you read that right), an older couple asked me a few questions about products. I answered their questions and they walked off. I was up on ladder when they came back. They asked my name and said " You are more than this job" "You are meant for better opportunities" "We both feel it. I hope you realize this. " and they walked away. I quit 4 weeks later and went to a trade school. I'm celebrating 27 years owing my own business.
What I love most about this is that most of the questions Steve is asking about entrepreneurship are things he already knows, but he's still asking like a beginner for the sake of his viewers.
I can attest that the signal to noise ratio was a life defining discovery for me especially in my career. After years of average academic performance, I realized in medical school with 6 figures of debt to pay on my own that success was not optional. I spent so much of my time filtering distractions and noises of life to hone in on my future. When it got close to boards, which as a medical student is a deciding step for your future, I even distanced myself from my family to decrease the noise. Fast forward I finished school, I got top board grades, scored the top in residency exams, am financially supporting my family and am practicing to making a difference for my patients. The signal to noise ratio is simply one word: focus. Focus on what your priorities are and sacrifice what are lower on the list.
I failed at business for over 7 years after getting out of the military. After being homeless for a bit, having a coming to Jesus moment, I decided I was going to be the best employee and I didn't care if it was a dishwasher, so I got a job as a busser. within 9 months I was a manager, started 2 local businesses, bought a house started more successful businesses and so on. For me it was humility. Getting a job was "low" and I was "too good" for that. I changed my mindset to being a learner and knowing nothing. I still claim to know nothing hahaha. But now I help CEO's and founders with outsourcing and coaching. Love it.
My grandmother did the exact same thing that his mother did. My grandmother came from the poorest family in her town during the Great Depression. She started putting money away when she worked for a dime store while she was in high school. Because of her investing and saving, She has paid for six college degrees, cars, braces, furniture, down payment on homes, all for other people and her family, including me. She is now paying for her assisted-living facility, solely by herself. All because she started saving for when she was a teenager and investing in the stock market early. She literally changed the entire trajectory of our family by herself.
I was 18 and a waitress in a pub when I was serving this older couple, we got chatting in between courses and he asked what I was going to do as a career, I said I’m thinking about a few options that we briefly chatted about. He said I don’t think you’re right for those careers, I think you’ll do something else really well, you’re better than that. It was the first time I felt someone believed in me, I wish I knew their names so I could thank them for that belief when I didn’t have in myself. 18 year old me would never have dreamed that years later I got my masters in law and I’ve just started my own business.
Ah, here I am watching this- a stay at home mother, wondering if my thankless tireless Payless role here in the home is worth anything. And then I saw his reaction when he saw his mother.
Only seen Kevin O'Leary on Shark Tank...didn't think I'd like him as a human. Now I realize I love him. Great interview.
With so many insightful guests on the show, can you imagine how much that little notepad would be worth in the future? What a guy!
