The Soul-Crushing Evolution of LinkedIn: From Network to Performance Space

Discover how LinkedIn transformed from a simple professional directory into a mandatory, often toxic, performance stage that drains job seekers and profits from user engagement.

Short Summary

  • LinkedIn's initial value (simple resume/networking) was corrupted by growth hacks targeting FOMO.
  • Founder Reed Hoffman engineered early expansion by mining user address books, bypassing privacy norms.
  • The platform shifted focus from genuine connections to engagement metrics, rewarding superficial bragging and content posting.
  • Consequences include soul-crushing job searches, endemic "ghost jobs," and forcing users into performative corporate personas 24/7.

This document details the strategic steps LinkedIn took—from the Outlook plugin to prioritizing social media features—that warped the job market and user psychology. Understand the mechanics behind the platform's current negative influence on the modern corporate environment.

My favourite experience on LinkedIn was, when I asked for a raise at my job, as I was doing the work of at least 3 people. Naturally, it was rejected due to "income shortages" at the company. The funny part is that not even a day later, one of my bosses posted a page lenght post on his LinkedIn profile, describing how he was able to buy a brand new car on the company's name. He went on to describe how the company made record income that year and how hard and exhausting it was to choose the perfect family car for his family. It was so painful to read through, it was unreal. I resigned a week after that.
