my wife, 10 years ago: "I don't want a honeymoon or an expensive ring. I'd rather save the money for a house." Now: we are happily married, in a nice house, with 3 amazing kids. We could not imagine living any other life.

My neice told her boyfriend WHERE and WHAT STYLE of ring to buy her. He has been working for a year saving his money and still cannot afford it. Her DAD said he would pay the rest of it so they can get engaged. I think this young man should RUN, not walk away while he still can.

My father put a spark plug ring on my mother's finger when they were teenagers. This year they will be celebrating 62 years together.

When I proposed to my wife, my late mother in-law looked at the ring, pulled me aside and asked how much I paid. I was primed for a ribbing about paying too little. She proceeded to tell me that I got ripped off. Stay with me people. This story is not going where you might think. She called her friend who was a jeweler. Together they showed me the ring I had purchased under a loop. I learned all about color and inclusions and refraction. I was then told that for what I paid the stone was very poor quality. I returned the ring, got a full refund and went to Jewelers Row in Philadelphia. I spent exactly the same amount on the new ring, which got the approval of my mother in-law, and her jeweler friend. My mother in law was not upset with what I spent. She was upset a jewler ripped me off. She wanted me to get what I paid for. Such a smart woman. I miss her.

I spent $120 on my wife's wedding ring. Not even a week's wage. It was about two days. Twenty years later, it was the best investment I ever made. I've asked her several times if she wants a nicer one now that I can afford it. She always says, "Nope. I love mine." Best. Investment. Ever.

My grandmother told me men used to set the budget and have the jeweler lay out all the selections in that budget. Then the woman could pick which ring they wanted within their fiancé’s budget. Seems a sensible approach to me.

To all of the people sharing their lovely stories about their marriages in the comments: a HUGE thank you from a SAHM in Italy. I've been getting so tired of awful people/news lately. I love my husband of 17 years and 3 kids so deeply: I can't tell you how uplifting it is for me to read about all you good people who care about the right things ❤ I wish all the awful, stupid people out there would learn from you.

Imagine you buy an engagement ring for your fiancé and she loves it. But after reading a bunch of hate on the Internet decides she is worth way more. The Internet ruins a lot of good things people have going for them.
