Courage in Inhumane Times: Confronting Apathy and Building Collective Action

Learn why acknowledging fear, not ignoring it, is the prerequisite for true courage in destabilizing times. Discover how collective awareness combats oppressive systems designed to divide and silence you.

Short Summary

  • Identify the danger of collective "severing" from harsh realities (fascism, injustice) as a loss of collective humanity.
  • Understand that true courage requires admitting fear first; bravery is acting despite apprehension.
  • Recognize that oppressive systems thrive on division, pitting marginalized groups against each other to distract from structural issues.
  • Build community support networks to counteract isolation, making sustained action the only path to liberation.

Host Lee McGowan interviews activist Michelle MiJung Kim on confronting the current state of fear, apathy, and systemic erosion in America. This discussion provides a framework for moving past performative allyship toward tangible, courageous action rooted in shared vulnerability and recognizing interconnected liberation.

Description

Things are getting so bad in America that many people are checking out, but we can’t keep pretending things are normal when we know they aren’t. We must collectively wake up to what’s happening, to how we got here, to the ugly and the scary that we’ve allowed to flourish to find the courage to stand against it. That while hope is important, we must also acknowledge change is not coming if we don’t stand up and work for it. People are not being rewarded for standing on the right side of history right now. There’s a real reason to be afraid of speaking out, but we have to do it anyway, and we have to do it even if we’re afraid. In fact, as our guest Michelle MiJung Kim says, “We can only truly practice courage when we are afraid”. Thank you both, I cried the entire time, I feel the same, scared, alone, as if those around me are zombies and have no feelings. Many revel in the atrocities we are witnessing...I stay awake at night and cry over these things. Hearing you both feel the same and physically are hurting and sick gives me a sense of community with like minded humans. ❤ love you both! "It's Us Bebe💞"

The bullying is truly a trigger . As someone born with a disability, I was bullied a lot. Meanness is a non starter for me.

Michelle Mijung Kim needs to be highlighted more and more! She spoke to several of my family members about her fear! Her fear of stepping out of her comfort zones! Fear of being attacked! Thanks Leigh! Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦
