One of the smartest things he did was putting the main segments of his show in full on YouTube. He’s reaching audiences he never would have by doing this and it’s a big deal.
The only thing wrong with this piece was referring to the journalists that work for Last Week Tonight as "former journalists." They are definitely still doing the real work of journalism. Just because they are putting their skills to work for a non-traditional outlet does not mean they have abandoned their field. Given how well researched every story on the show is, I'd say they do outstanding work.
"You can criticize something because you love it. Because you want it to get better" Amen, John
John reported on medical care in our prisons and jails and was THE ONLY report I saw (decades in the corrections field here) that was 100% correct. Better than any national or legacy media outlet. He's a gift to America and people should LISTEN to what he's saying.
“I think you criticize something *because* you love it. You love it and you want it to get better.”
John always says he "dead inside" but I see a man who cares deeply and is full of empathy.
He almost cried at the end there. He knows, deep in his heart, that those systemic problems won’t end in his lifetime. I am very grateful for his comedic coverage. His awards are well-earned
I watch that show when I wanna laugh and cry and feel rage simultaneously lol
This is the amount of rigor and professionalism in research that should be required for ALL news broadcasts... yet it's just the standard for his comedy show. You're a treasure, John!
He does love America. He was nearly in tears. He does love you, and you lucked out.
