My Polish father in law basically said the same thing about Russian "meat shields" as a teenager and found himself in a lot of trouble. I wish he could hear this segment.
In the winter war between Russia and Finland Russia lost around 145k soldiers and over 200k got sick or was wounded.

i have seen a lot of conflicting opinions in street interviews where older people tend to be pro russian but it isnt an iron clad rule. ive seen people in their 40s saying they should take back ukraine and things were better in their parents day. but who knows if people were speaking different for the camera, like you see in china
Uh oh. More Russian Oligarchs are gonna accidentally fall from tall buildings.
Will be interesting to see how many truly are drafted vs their external 300,000 target and alleged internal target of over a million.
They didn't even go into the absolute horrors of Russian basic training.
Russia doesn't have as many bodies this time though, both due to Russia being smaller than the USSR, and due to an aging population. In WWII Russia had a lot of young men. Germany had a lot of young men too, in fact the Germans outnumbered the Russians by a fairly significant margin on the Eastern front when war broke out, because half of the USSR's army was stationed far away, such as near Japanese controlled Manchuria, out of concern that Japan would attack them. Due to being caught off guard, outnumbered and unprepared, the Russians took very heavy losses, including millions of men who surrendered or were captured after being encircled and cut off from supply lines. After that initial shock, the numbers of men on the front lines were relatively even for a while, but then in 1943-1944 Germany started running low on good men, and started having to resort to men of less ideal ages, physical fitness, etc while Russia was able to maintain the caliber of their soldiers better. Another key difference is that Russia has never done well in an offensive war. Russian morale is often really poor in those cases because no one wants to be a meat shield for a war that's not even necessary. Even in defensive wars, lack of proper supplies, training and organization can cause heavy losses, poor morale and unrest among soldiers - it was the defeats of the Russo-Japanese war that led to the 1905 revolution. And then the struggles of WWI led to the 1917 revolution.
