“Young people stopped living their lives and started watching other people live their lives” I think Dr. Phil nailed it with that line.
I have been a teacher for the last 17 years. Big changes: 1. No one is allowed to fail. Teachers are pressured to pass kids by any means necessary. 2. Smart phone takeover 3. Homework of any sort doesn’t happen 4. All standards have been watered down. No child left behind…
As a former teacher I can agree that every year some new PhD group in academia develops a program with little or no proof of concept. These programs are bought into at a cost of millions and forced on teachers and usually switched out every year or two. It is all about looking like you're doing something, school districts want to act as if kids are so different but honestly real learning is exactly the same no matter what is happening with tech or trends.... the way you learn to walk the way you learn to talk the way you learn almost anything is repeated actions until it's second nature. It's not exciting and no one wants to do it but that is the reality.
My husband is a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math teacher in the public schools. He’s been a teacher for 17 years. Every night I hear his stories about how badly behaved the kids are. I can only speak for his school of course, but the teachers there have zero support. Kids throwing books across the room, walking out of class, turning on music during a lesson, moving their chairs so he can’t walk across the room, on and on. He sends the kids to administration, writes referrals, calls parents, etc, and nothing happens. There are no consequences for the bad behaviors. It literally breaks my heart watching him go through this. I wish he would pick a new career and leave. He WANTS to teach (and he’s good at it), and he cares, but sadly, a lot of the class period becomes devoted to managing bad behavior. The few kids there who are trying to learn miss out on precious instructional minutes. He’s volunteered to teach summer school for many years, but last year he needed a mental break from the abuse. Parents need to be held accountable for their children’s wretched behavior, and the schools need to have a way of enforcing discipline. So many teachers are leaving the field, and it’s going to get worse.
I was overjoyed when I saw Dr Phil had finally found the guts to stand up. People listen to him, they don't listen to other professionals speaking out.
20+ years ago George Carlin said "any day now I'm gonna hear somebody refer to a rape victim as an unwilling sperm recipient" and its finally happened 😂💀
Teacher here — I think a major problem is that we have take away students *right* to fail. Students should not be allowed to feel dignified in being mediocre and defiant. Families should not be allowed to offload the burden of poorly raised children on a system with finite resources. They need to take a seat at the table.
I'm a tutor for a company that gets hired on at districts to pull kids out of classrooms and help them with material. The level of misbehaving that I was not trained to deal with is staggering, let alone the sheer lack of comprehension of skills they ought to have learned 3-4 years ago! It's terrifying that these kids will be voting within the next decade. We are screwed as a society.
