For those who love this film, please look up Kaufman's original ending. Clem and Joel are well into their old age and still erasing each other. This ending suggests that if we don't learn from past relationships we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes
The realization of what it actually costs for him to erase her from his memory is particularly brutal. He had very strong memories of Huckleberry Hound. Beyond that, because Clementine was taken to the memory, he lost the memory about killing the bird. More importantly, he lost the memory that he had of his mother bathing him in the sink, which was one of his favorites, and therefore foundational to who he was as a person. It's so devastating to him, he's crying in his sleep while it's happening.
My favorite movie of all time. I’ve seen it easily 15+ times & love sharing it with anyone who hasn’t seen it & shows genuine interest in it. 2 of my favorite actors as well ♥️
one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. hearing how much stress and care went into it makes me appreciate it even more
This was hard to watch now because I loved this movie when it came out, and it brought back so many memories of hope I had for the future at the time I first watched it. When I look back, all the things I hoped have to happen never did, and some fell apart miserably. This video created a weird inception moment. I relived a bunch of memories and feelings that were long buried, just like the movie itself. It was very painful, but I realized I wouldn't change it (most of it, anyway) because it brought me to where I am now. Great job, MT. Great movie about the philosophy of pain and regret and love and memory.
Huge shoutouts to MT for breaking down this classic. Hope you guys enjoyed it.
7:30 i think rather than it being used to tell the timeline of memories. Its being used to tell the timeline of the relationship. With all 4 colors representing the different stages Green- spring new beginnings, and hope out of the cold depressing winter Red- summer, intense burning passion and love for eachother. The relationship is fun Orange- fall. The falling out between them, relationship getting colder and the life dying Blue- winter. Cold, depression And when they remeet her hair is blue with green routes significing the beginning of the cycle again
It’s interesting that Clem gets pegged as a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, when towards the end of the movie in the library, she literally tells Joel she ISN’T that. She’s not going to be the girl who is the answer to a boring guy’s problems. Joel may think she’s a MPDG, but she isn’t. She has flaws and to her credit, when she’s not emotionally wrecked for whatever reason, she admits to them.
When this movie came out, I was 21 and I thought it was romantic. Now I think it’s tragic. Or at least fatalistic.
The green hair is when they met, in the spring. Red is in the summer, orange is for the autumn, and blue is their winter.
