Though there'd been some before this started off a big craze. The movie also started off viral marketing and it remains one of the most profitable films of all time. Now this holds a special place in my heart because it dropped at the age I was just getting into horror. However I was still too young to go see it in the cinema. I was absolutely obsessed though. I got completely caught up in the lore and was one of those people who thought it was real. Now to be fair I think it's understandable when I explain how that happened. So Blockbuster right, they had this documentary that was released on VHS alongside the movie. Though I couldnt go and see it in the cinema my dad rented that for me and my sister. Presented completely straight it told the legend of the blair witch. - its not true...its true (6:23) It also talked about the serial killer Rustin Parr and all the people who was said to be influenced by the witch. Now at no point in it did they say that any of this was fake. So 11 year old me watched it taking it all at face value. I think doing a documentary alongside it helped cement the legends and I completely bought into the film. To me, three students went up into the woods and they all disappeared without a trace. This was even backed up by IMDB trivia who listed the actors missing and presumed dead. They also used the actors real names so it added this level of authenticity. I believed The blair witch was out there in the woods of burketsville and it made me question our world. Second Sight have just dropped a brand new blu ray with an incredible transfer of the film. It finally rectifies the issues that a lot of people had with the physical media releases and is by far the best way to make the movie. It also comes with a wealth of special features and new documentries about the movie.
