Description

In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, my guest is Dr. Erich Jarvis, PhD, a professor and Head of the Laboratory of Neurogenetics of Language at Rockefeller University and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). We discuss the brain circuits and genes underlying spoken language and why the ability to learn and produce vocalizations is extraordinarily rare in the animal kingdom. We also explore why song likely evolved before language, how gesture and movement share deep neural roots with speech, the neurobiology of stuttering, why childhood is the optimal window for language acquisition, and how physical movement — including dance — may help preserve speech and cognitive function across a lifetime. Improving speech often improves presence. That’s why language shapes confidence, music shapes emotion, and rhythm shapes connection.

The way you speak is often the clearest reflection of how you think.

Whenever i am party to any discussion about language, I can't help but drop this (lyric) quote: "Language is the liquid that we're all dissolved in. Great for solving problems, after it creates a problem." Modest Mouse Another fascinating episode! Thank you!

Language is also a carrier of culture. It is how we enter and perceive of our symbolic world as children.

My doggie really agrees that he can recognize so many words and just because he can't speak doesn't mean he doesn't understand. Vocal learning research helps me recover my voice after vocal fold surgery.

It would be very interesting to hear Dr. Huberman and Dr. Josef talk about the effects of antidepressants on the brain and if their use should be reconsidered etc.

I do agree that, if you are consistently putting effort into your muscles with proper diet and supplement, you can outlive longer, both physically and mentally, since exercise links to release of various hormones, including testosterone which is crucial in feeling focused and motivated, it was wonderful to get to know Dr. Jarvis
