Description

Dr. Alan Castel, PhD, is a professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and one of the world's foremost experts on human memory and cognitive aging. We discuss what science actually tells us about how to improve our learning ability and memory at any age. We also discuss how memory works, why all planning and imagination about the future is based on the past, false memories, and how to leverage curiosity, emotion, and self-testing retrieval practice to stamp in memories for the long term. We discuss what "superagers"—people who actually improve their cognitive capacity with age—do differently than everyone else. This episode is for anyone interested in the science of memory and tools to maintain and improve your memory across the lifespan. After caring for 13 years both parents, I learnt so much about ageing , my father 93 my mom 101 ( if not covid she may have lived longer) great unprocessed food, and learning something new everyday. Rubic cube 3x3 to 10x10, reciting poetry and learning lines. Keep pushing the limits. Limit medications. My mother was 93 before she took her first prescription. So happy that they never went to a home.

I’m thrilled to see this topic covered! I’ve been walking at our local high school track and the redwood forest almost daily solely for my mental health (I have bipolar disorder) & it makes such a difference! I often enjoy listening to the @hubermanlab podcast while I walk. Between my walks & my well-formulated vegan ketogenic diet for menopause & bipolar disorder (supervised by the Stanford Metabolic Psychiatry Clinic’s Dr. Shebani Sethi) I’m at an ideal weight, my thinking is clear, I’m strong, and I feel better than ever at age 56. Walking is my jam!

Brain fog was stealing my life 😓 I couldn't remember conversations, appointments, simple words, and I felt so stupid. I was terrified of what was happening to me. Then a friend mentioned the Menopause Transition Playbook author is (Lisa.Grant) and everything clicked. 26 lbs down and my mind is clear, I can think and remember, this reset was the cognitive boost I desperately needed honestly.

It’s fascinating to hear about 'errorful learning,' but how many of us are actually brave enough to embrace 'failing' in our daily lives? Does the fear of looking stupid stop our cognitive growth more than aging itself?

OMG at about 45 minutes you spoke about the woman who died because she reverted to routine in an emergency. I have tried to explain this to so many people about myself. I was a FedEx Driver for 21 years. I love to drive but am terrified to drive in a country where they drive on the left. I know in an emergency I would dive/steer to the right and into oncoming traffic. I drove a motorcycle in New Zealand but would only follow others, never lead. And yes, once getting back on the road I went into the wrong lane. Luckily there was no traffic and one of the others flagged me over and got in front. Now I know there is science behind this! Thank you.
