Description

Dr. Richard Davidson, PhD, is a professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a pioneer in the scientific study of meditation. We discuss how meditation changes your brain and body, how just 5 minutes daily can improve focus, stress resilience and your overall health, and we cover different types of meditation. We also address common myths such as the idea that meditation is to "clear your mind." And we discuss common challenges with meditation and how to overcome them. This episode offers both the science and the practical tools to build a consistent meditation practice to improve your mental and physical health and help you flourish. Meditation absolutely saved my ass. Recovering alcoholic here. I used to run from being in my head-avoiding guilt and shame etc. Life is MUCH easier when you are curious about what’s floating around your mind. Do it, folks.

As a Buddhist practitioner my grandfather meditated for more than 7 decades daily, and he lived 95 years, the most peaceful person I have ever met in my life.

I started meditating about two years ago and have almost never missed a day since. It's as much a part of my routine as coffee 😅 and I now can't imagine my life without it. As someone who was diagnosed with major depression, anxiety and an eating disorder I can say meditation did more for me than therapy and pills ever did. I say "meditation is my medication" 💖 Thanks for the brilliant episode. I appreciate you guys 💖

I like how he pulled out that “lactate of the mind” idea, because that’s honestly the part most people miss. The 5 minutes a day thing sounds almost too simple, but when you actually try it, you run straight into that initial spike of anxiety and restlessness. It’s kind of reassuring hearing that’s not failure, it’s actually the signal that something is happening under the hood. What he’s pointing to is basically early-stage attention training, like building stable attention in shamatha where you’re not trying to eliminate thoughts but just keep returning and noticing. That moment where you realize “oh I’m lost again” is actually sati strengthening, not a mistake, and over time those repeated returns start to shift baseline reactivity into something closer to samadhi. It’s subtle, but you can feel how those tiny daily reps start reducing that “stickiness” he talks about, and it makes you wonder how much of our normal stress is just untrained attention looping on itself 😊🙏

I read his book 10 years ago - Emotional life of your brain. I remember being fascinated and swallowing the book in 1 week. So happy he is here today 🥰🥹🙏 Thanks Huberman! ❤

long time Goenka vipassana student here, and I also have relaxed towards death. It is part of the life experience, and as Dr. Richard mentions, understanding that our time is limited is such a great motivator to step into each day with love and compassion and joy for simply being. "Today is a day to be kind to everyone I meet" is my base mode each day...I build on top of this.

Would love to see both Dr. Richard Davidson and Dr. K come back for a trifecta meditation-themed Huberman Lab podcast!! Each of your perspectives are so different yet relatable in their own way

The timing on this is wild because I recently started practicing meditation again and I already noticed nearly every benefit he described. I feel like meditation needs to be described differently because it's really not that mystical or deep. It's just developing comfort and familiarity with the sensations of your body and the present moment. It's so simple.

I appreciate how this episode breaks the myth that meditation is about “clearing the mind.” Understanding that it’s about awareness and training attention makes it much more approachable for beginners.
