Description

Dr. Marc Brackett, PhD, is founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center at Yale University. We discuss the science of emotion regulation and practical tools to increase your emotional intelligence. Dr. Brackett clarifies exactly how to do that both in the context of relationships, but also things that you can do on your own to become more emotionally intelligent to later serve you in the context of relationships, work, school, etc. We also discuss how your childhood experiences influence your relationship with emotions, with particular emphasis on how boys and men are socialized around emotional processing and expression. You don’t control emotions by fighting them. You control them by understanding them. You can’t regulate what you refuse to recognize.

What a great line: I can't relate if I'm not you, but I can have the courage to have empathy for your experience

I’d be interested in hearing more about how indoor air quality, specifically mold and microbial growth, can affect cognitive and mental health in some people. It’s so pervasive and it’s almost not mentioned in most health podcasts! Thanks and i appreciate this show 😊

Andrew, I really appreciate this one. I’m 72 and known for my ability to remain calm in difficult situations. So much so that people used to think I didn’t care when a problem arose as a manager. I did care and dealt with the problem without the theatrics. Didn’t realize what a valuable trait that was until recent years. Your guest made me feel better about it. Thanks always!

Marc's answer to the hero question had me in tears. Mine was my grandmother. Always curious, always supportive. I wish we all had those kinds of people in our lives 💖

Love is more than a feeling, it is actually a skill, and a result.
