Anxiety gets stronger when you keep obeying it. The way out usually starts with proving to your nervous system, one small step at a time, that discomfort is not danger.
Taking small opportunities to connect is so powerful. Today I went to gift pastries to some employees of a CBD/hair/tattoo shop that helped me out the other day when I slipped on the pavement and skinned my knee. They immediately came outside, invited me in, gave me some cream to disinfect the wound, and tea for me to drink while I rested for a bit, even going as far as offering to drive me home or call a car, amazing people, and after dropping off the pastries and seeing their surprise and smile I just couldn't stop smiling on my way home, doing things for others (even small things) brings us immense happiness
is it me or could this conversation have gone much deeper into the actual "how to overcome social anxiety" instaed of mostly focussing on the exposure-theory. I feel like there is alot of valuable ground that wasn't covered here, like habits that create more anxiety, habits that lower it, context and behaviours that might be conducive to create social interaction. But also about the structure of identity and other fundamental elements that i suppose are needed to interact with another, and how this ties into anxiety. I think alot of the anxiety is also about our beliefs about ourselves, not just the other which i feel this conversation mostly focussed on. I think the anxiety that comes from low selfworth which is more rampant in today's society of lonely people and idealized life is quite significant. And i suppose there are a hoast of other elements that influence social anxiety. It would have been nice to learn more about these mechanisms of anxiety (and how exposure therapy overcomes them) and some more insight in how to actually become better at social interaction and social dynamics (e.g. conversation) - beyond just exposure therapy. I myself for instance notice very much, how sleep, productivity, environment, exercise, limiting phone use, going outside etc. help. But I still find it hard to actually genuinely connect with people and find a way to be more comfortable with it. In part i think it has to do with my own beliefs about myself but also the nature of modern social dynamics. I don't feel like this conversation did much more than tell me that apparantly is not as scary as it looks - which i guess i already knew. PS. i did actually enjoy the podcast ;) <3
Dr. Huberman once said that taking the time to wish someone a good morning can have a positive effect in a person's life from day to day (I think) so, good morning, everyone~
The title isn't really covering the topics of "overcoming social anxiety" but rather focuses on the science behind socialization and how we do it. These are distinct differences.
They keep saying that spending day alone feels like crap but for me having a day for myself rejuvenates me in so many ways that I cant comprehend how can it be as bad as they say?
This guy seems like a great father, neighbor, and human being...
Im suffering from it for years it's terrible
What a wonderful guest, so expert and genuine. He certainly appears to be equally brilliant and kind of heart. ❤ Listening to his insight and the discourse has been uplifting. Thank you.
