Mastering Biological Rhythms and Neurochemicals for Time Perception

Understand how your daily biological clocks (circadian/circannual) and fast-acting neurochemicals dictate your experience and memory of time. Apply specific light and work structuring tools to optimize focus and emotional recall.

Short Summary

  • Precise circadian entrainment through light exposure anchors mood, energy, and accurate short-interval time measurement.
  • Dopamine release makes time feel slow in the moment (overestimation) but creates long memories; Serotonin reverses this effect.
  • Leverage ultradian cycles (approx. 90 minutes) for intense focus, separating deep work blocks by 2–4 hours.
  • Structure your day using consistent habits to segment time meaningfully through dopamine release.

This episode explores the multi-scale biological rhythms that govern our sense of time, from yearly (circannual) cycles affecting hormones to daily (circadian) and internal (ultradian) clock systems. Learn how key neuromodulators—Dopamine, Serotonin, and Norepinephrine—act as your internal stopwatches, influencing whether an experience feels fast now but long later, or vice versa. Mastering these factors allows you to better structure your focus periods and manage emotional memory encoding.

Description

In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I explore how biological rhythms and neurochemicals impact our perception of time. I describe how the body aligns with daily and seasonal light cycles to regulate hormones that influence energy, mood and motivation throughout the year. I share science-based tools to enhance focus and productivity, including strategies for structuring work intervals and optimizing the timing of exercise and daily light exposure. I also explain how neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin influence our perception of time and how factors such as novelty, emotion and routine impact how we experience and recall time. I’m absolutely in love with these videos. I’m jealous of his students who’re able to hear him speak in person and ask him questions.

Correct me if im wrong but I feel like Andrew did exactly what I was hoping he would do and now I am seeing slightly shorter videos that are a bit more dumbed down. I now can sit throguh entire video and not have to look up words every 2 min xd. Nice, thanks Andrew

I have a weekly radiologic physics class that is 3.5 hours long with one 10 min break. I want to cry at the end. Now I know exactly why!

Ty! This comment has nothing to do with this video but I’d love to see you interview a neurologist named Kulreet Chaudhary. 😊
