Systemic Failures Leading to the Murder of Lauren McCluskey

Examine the critical breakdown points within law enforcement and university administration that facilitated the calculated murder of talented student athlete Lauren McCluskey. Understand the actions survivors and advocates are taking now to prevent these failures from recurring.

Short Summary

  • Law enforcement repeatedly minimized credible threats and failed to investigate a known sex offender despite repeated warnings from the victim and her friends.
  • Melvin Roland (Shawn Fields), a twice-convicted sex offender on parole, lied about his identity, age, and history before extorting and ultimately murdering Lauren.
  • Campus police ignored clear indicators of danger, minimized reports of blackmail, and crucially failed to check Roland's criminal record, wasting valuable time.
  • Lauren's parents established the Lauren McCluskey Foundation to push for nationwide campus safety reform, including initiatives like "Lauren's Promise."

This episode details the horrific timeline: Lauren McCluskey’s promising life as a University of Utah track athlete was destroyed by her ex-boyfriend, Melvin Roland, who was able to operate freely due to institutional negligence. We track how multiple agency interactions—from the campus RA reporting a gun threat to official police investigations of extortion—resulted in inaction, culminating in her abduction and murder on October 22, 2018. Reviewing the aftermath reveals ongoing institutional resistance and powerful efforts by her family to enact lasting change.

The way absolutely nobody cared that a repeat sex offender was on a college campus is terrifying

Hi, I'm Diamond. My friend sent me your video and I'm in tears. You really don't know how much I needed to hear this. I spent the past few years kicking myself about not doing more and it's just a lot. I really appreciate your compassion when talking about Lauren. ❤

25:26 This dispatcher should be used as an example. She listens, she’s thorough, she provides resources, and respects boundaries, and encourages the safest option. Very, very impressed.

If only that first officer that helped with the car exchange was able to help her again, she could still be here. She really cared about Lauren's safety.

I'm so proud of that first campus dispatcher. That girl came up with safety options for Lauren that nobody thought about. Shout out to her and all she did to try to help keep Lauren safe!

The first dispatcher was so nice and the second one (October 12th) is so dismissive and seems annoyed

The fact that she would have to explain herself over and over over again before every call just shows they really didn’t take this poor girl seriously RIP Lauren

Also, hiring Melvin as a night club bouncer without background check was not very smart.

The fact that this man was NOT a student at the college, why would the actual police send her back to campus police!!!! This is ridiculous. Praying for this family.

This case reinforces my belief that sex offenders should *NEVER* be released from prison!!! By the time they get caught and arrested, they've already had numerous victims. Once they've done something that actually gets them not only arrested but also convicted, they've done enough to never be released.
