In this interview we cover the practical science of building and maintaining muscle as you age with a focus on what actually matters for healthspan and independence. We discuss how much training older adults really need, why power matters more than strength for fall prevention, and how to think about loads and reps after 60. Brad also explains why protein requirements increase with age, what the leucine threshold is and why it matters, and gives his frank assessment of the supplement landscape including the one he thinks has genuine evidence behind it. We also touch on VO2 max, balance, flexibility and the role of consistency. A practical, evidence-based conversation for anyone serious about staying strong and independent as they age. 📚 Chapters 0:00 Why muscle matters for longevity and healthspan 4:06 Strength vs power;which predicts how long you live? 7:30 Sarcopenia; what it really means and can it be reversed? 11:09 How much do you actually need to train after 60? 15:53 Reps, loads and how hard to push 17:45 The case for power training and injury risk 25:19 Machines vs free weights; what actually matters? 33:01 Optimising recovery as you age 36:25 Protein, leucine and the supplement question 46:04 Does cardio still matter? I concur ....Breakdown major muscles groups by doing simple sets of push, pull and squat routines. Hang from a bar daily and look for opportunities to walk briskly.

Is there any reason not to take leucine supplements with more conservative protein portions. It seems that there is conflicting evidence about how much protein is good. There is also animal evidence that loading up on certain amino acids (e.g. methionine, isoleucine) could be harmful to lifespan.

Yes!!! The effect of adding supplemental protein post age 65 has been dramatic (2-3x / day). Regular sauna affect is nice too. Peptides like BPC and TB500. Us old farts can still hang with the kids (chuckling). Rock on Richard...

I have gotten as skinny as a stick within four or five years. I feel like I should train to put muscle on or should I be training for strength?
