I saw this in the movie theatre in 1968. When the apes turned around on horseback during the roundup and it was the first time the audience saw it was apes, a loud gasp went up from the crowd. Everyone knew it was a movie about apes ruling the planet but it was still a shock to actually see them. At the end of the movie, when Taylor was kneeling in front of the statue, the only sound was the waves crashing. The audience was dead silent and no body moved from their seat for a good long minute. Everybody walked out of the theatre in silence. The concept is old hat now but to that 1960s crowd, it was a thought provoking exercise.

Always so great seeing someone watching this with almost no clues and not having the ending ruined beforehand. 🐵

The reason Taylor laughed so hard at Landon when he was planting that tiny American flag was because no one was alive to care about Americans conquering another planet. Landon was still living in the past as though planting that flag was going to make some kind of difference.

It's pretty refreshing to know that there are people out there that didn't already know the ending to this movie going in.

The tribunal of the apes mimicking, see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil was hilarious.

Rod Serling wrote the ending, which is why it is brilliant and timeless

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I always felt like the first movie was so perfect, especially with that ending, that it should have been a standalone; they should have never done any sequels or remakes.
