Hi Quinn!, Guys here!
SOMA has in part a similar premise to this story. -The protagonist goes for a new kind of brain scan after a head injury, and suddenly awakes in a horrific post-apocalyptic future - we later learn that the scan taken was, with his own permission, eventually developed into a template for AI construction and included in most development toolkits. Also, I recognize the reference here in the title "Lena". Surprised Quinn didn't touch on it.
"I have Mouth and I am Screaming But no one listen"
The fact that this is a legal battle that's believable is terrifying in itself too. Nothing scarier than corporations stealing your identity (literally!) This also reminds me of Henrietta Lacks and how scientists used her cells long after her death!
When I saw the title, I was sure that this would be about the cruciform from the Hyperian series.
right off the bat i'm thinking of Henrietta Lacks. In the US, legally, corporations are classified as 'people.' so it's especially infuriating that in this story, this man's literal consciousness is not granted that same status. seems about right.
The set up is a powerful parallel to the history of Henrietta Lacks, the theft of her genetic material and creation of HeLa cells
The opening music always fills me with a sense of dread.

So many of these ideas remind me of the serial Duncan Idaho gholas in the Dune series
