Description

Poul Anderson’s Tau Zero is one of the most influential works of hard science fiction ever. It was published in 1970 and was based on his earlier short story “To Outlive Eternity,” it’s a novel that takes real physics—especially relativity—and runs with it to the extreme. Anderson leans hard into scientific accuracy, making the book a standout example of how speculative fiction can stay grounded in actual science. It was written in the 1970s, so not all of the science holds up, believe it or not, our understanding of the universe has changed a lot in the last 55 years but that doesn’t take away from how ambitious and influential the book still is. The plot of Tau Zero follows the journey of the starship Leonora Christine, a colonization vessel tasked with reaching the nearby star Beta Virginis. Crew members, consisting of 25 men and 25 women, are aboard the ship, which is powered by a Bussard ramjet. The crew's journey is subject to the effects of relativity, specifically time dilation. The original mission plan involves decelerating at the same rate during the second half of the journey. However, disaster strikes when the ship passes through a nebula, damaging the deceleration field generators. With no way to slow down, unless they randomly encountered resources on their course, they were forced to continue accelerating towards lightspeed. 👽 Please consider supporting this channel on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ideasoficeandfire or PAYPAL - https://paypal.me/QuinnsIdeas?locale.x=en_US 🎨 Art: Thumbnail: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/Z5X3y1 🖌️Other Art: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xzRPpJEF4-Y1IHEGDOthWbwDi9eXY6Iy-gCOYnHrmQE/edit?usp=sharing 🎵 Music: https://www.youtube.com/@JamezDahlMusic 📚 Get These Books! What i find so difficult about watching this channel is, (like whats happened on this video) i get 15 seconds in and I'm like 'Damn that sounds awesome i wanna read that'. And then i don't want to watch the rest because i don't want to spoil the book. It's really frustrating because i really like this channel lol.

Quinns bookshelf has gotta be a paid actor. Every time he posts I end up zooming in on the background just to make notes of all his dope finds so I can get em myself 🤣

This story reminds me of that episode of Futurama where they accidentally go way past the mark in a time machine, only to witness the universe end, start again, and grow into the exact same universe. With how many references they include in that show, I'm sure it was an inspiration!

I just finished reading Tau Zero a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised seeing you post this video. Thoroughly enjoyed the book even though it was depressing but thought-provoking.

The Boat of a Million Years is an absolute epic that should have won a Hugo or Nebula award….

The most heartbreaking part is when they look through the ship's camera and begin to see all the stars in the universe turning red (red giants) and dying out, and one character simply says, "No!" The entire book would make an excellent movie, or a single-season TV series. No more is needed.
