Was Identity Politics a Mistake? - Bernie Sanders
Analyzing the Democratic "Own Goal": Identity Politics Versus Working-Class Economics
Learn why focusing heavily on identity politics may have alienated the working class, and how political demagogues exploit real economic pain by targeting vulnerable minorities.
Short Summary
- Democratic neglect of working-class economic concerns, despite commitment to social justice issues, cost them electoral support.
- Demagogues effectively redirect frustration over crises like inflation and healthcare toward powerless minority groups instead of systemic solutions.
- The conversation contrasts the need for addressing significant national problems collaboratively with the polarizing tactics used in modern campaigns.
This discussion centers on the strategic critique that the Democratic Party's strong stance on social identity issues failed to adequately address the material struggles of working people, leading to an electoral backlash. Readers will gain insight into the mechanics of demagoguery and the necessary components for constructive, small-'d' democratic politics.

The problem is we don’t even speak the same language. How can I have a conversation with someone who keeps changing the definition of words that have had the same meaning for hundreds of years.
Chris is master at refocusing the MOMENT Bernie starts to bring Trump into it as an excuse. Truly amazing.
Bernie is better than most dems to have these conversations but he dodges the heart of the questions to go his to pre digested talking points
Good on Chris for not letting Bernie deflect the question about democrats to blaming Trump
If you can’t just say puberty blockers for kids is bad, then why tf would I trust you on the “big issues”
Chris you are the only person who could probably get me to listen to a full Bernie episode.
Cant wait for the full interview. Thank you for doing this. This little part was very interesting.

Its sort of funny to see a politician, even a more honest one like Bernie, talk about the other side using "us vs them" arguments, when he also uses us vs them arguments its just a different them.
This was hard to watch as Bernie is right - and has been for a long time - about the broken economics of America in terms of wealth inequality and it being the root cause of societal disfunction. But he does need to reckon with the culture of the Democratic party and WHY it's losing middle America.
