This is like the most philosophical episode of Love Island ever
The stoicism of a father is underrated
"We tend to only pathologize dependency and not independency" - 100% the highlight quote of the conversation. Hyper Independency is definitely a cliff we are at the edge of today.
Carl Jung and others talked about the Therapist replacing the Priest, in the form of the confessional, in the late 1800s and early 1900s (before World War 1).
I was at a picnic once. People asked me about my dating life. i said it was hard and gave some reason as to why i believe it was hard. I got dog piled on and told to go to therapy. That i has to see one and that it will help me be more attractive to women. Little did they know, i was already meeting and dating women(have a girlfriend now) but they assumed i was an incel because i said women are picky and its hard. It was like they were telling me to go confess my sins for saying something negative about women.
I refuse to believe this isn't Elisha Cuthbert faking an English accent.
I think this excerpt from “The Four Loves” by C.S. Lewis is just as pertinent to the discussion and one that encapsulates the issues with the defensive mechanisms of both therapy culture and productivity. “There is no safe investment. To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket – safe, dark, motionless, airless – it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation. The only place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell.”
Ideally, therapy should be a temporary crutch and not a long-term addiction.
