IQ Is Misunderstood - Spencer Greenberg
Deconstructing Intelligence Metrics, Imposter Syndrome, and Personality Disorder Dynamics
Discover surprising research findings that decouple high IQ from personal happiness, reveal foundational flaws in the Dunning-Kruger Effect, and explain the hidden drivers behind imposter syndrome among high achievers.
Short Summary
- Personality traits (Big Five) proved more predictive of life outcomes (income, education) than IQ alone, challenging conventional wisdom.
- High IQ shows zero correlation with life satisfaction or happiness, suggesting high achievers may pay a hidden psychological price for success.
- The classic Dunning-Kruger Effect may largely stem from mathematical artifacts (measurement noise) rather than pure cognitive failure.
- Understand that Imposter Syndrome actively links to perfectionism and procrastination, often leading high performers to drive themselves excessively.
Spencer Greenberg details the results of a massive replication study testing 40 claims about intelligence measurement, revealing that while IQ captures general cognitive ability (G), individual aptitudes and practiced skills dominate real-world performance. The discussion pivots to common psychological constructs, showing that personality often outweighs raw cognitive power in life outcomes, while traits like narcissism and sociopathy possess surprisingly adaptive, albeit often destructive, utility in specific social contexts.

When I studied psychology in college the professor stated intelligence was heritable. You should have seen the outrage in the class. People didn't want to believe it because it goes against a sense of self-determination and plasticity of society. It was even considered to be unfair. As if biology deals in fairness.
"Why does someone say IQ is fake?" "Because they got a low score."
I said to a guy at work "50% of people in the world are below average IQ". he said "no way can it be that high". "what do you suggest then" i said. he replied "maybe 20% or 30%. i could go with that". .... why do I tell this story ? To help people understand exactly what we are contending with.
This video has not yet had as many views as some of the others but for me as a clinical psychologist who earns her living by testing intelligence this was absolutely a goldmine of a conversation, I've never been more entertained and interested. I'm sure Chris won't read this comment, but I value this so much, and it will significantly influence the way that I give feedback to people. The part where skills play a very significant role in the overall intelligence is so incredibly valuable. It will put a huge positive spin on the results, and this one specific podcast episode will be the talk of many psychologists' consult groups all over the world, I hope. Chris with his astounding understanding and capability for going deep and christalizing the essence of any broader point has provided a professional level course with this episode, and the guest is fantastic. Thank you so much.
people talk about iq all the time but they don't mention the effect of executive function enough, someone can have a high iq but then struggle to leverage it if they struggle with executive function for example in adhd.
the military did studies on this a long time ago, and it matters a lot. For example, it predicted how many targets were hit by a tank and every ten point increase doubled the number of hits on targets so 90 hit twice as many targets as 80, 100, twice as many as ninety, and 110 hit twice as many as 100. there is another factor that is highly predictive of life success and that is p. P is how much someone can get done in a day, and it varies a lot. People with high p - energy, work ethic, executive function combination - can make a lot of money with not much IQ, just because they do so much in a day. I mean look at a super efficient roofer or small business person. I worked for a man who own a fried chicken restaurant, he made a fortune and he could barely read. I think he dropped out in like 6th grade. "hated school."
IQ has the heaviest correlation, but conscientiousness is right behind it. Hard work is the equalizer.
The reason intelligence is so special is because all of the traits that differentiate humans from the other animals are basically related to intelligence. You can call it "sapience" or "being made in the image of God". Other animals are stronger, faster, or can fly. But our intelligence sets us far apart from even the other apes.

It's easy to understand why IQ doesn't correlate with happiness or life satisfaction, smart people can see and understand what's wrong with the world, and how little influence they have over their own destiny.
