Tara Erickson & Jon Maturan react to and review One Piece Season 2, Episodes 1–3 — “The Beginning and the End,” “Good Whale Hunting,” and “Whisky Business.” Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s legendary manga sails into the Grand Line saga, introducing Baroque Works, new allies, and the growing legend of the Straw Hat Pirates. In “The Beginning and the End,” the crew arrives in Loguetown, the birthplace and execution site of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger. Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy — The Imperfects, Who Killed Sara?) stands on the very platform where Roger died, only to be captured by Buggy the Clown (Jeff Ward — Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Brand New Cherry Flavor) and Alvida (Ilia Isorelýs Paulino — Me Time, The Sex Lives of College Girls). As Smoker and Tashigi close in, a mysterious lightning strike destroys the execution platform and saves Luffy—while the enigmatic revolutionary Dragon watches from the shadows. Meanwhile Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu — Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, Pacific Rim: Uprising) tests fate with a supposedly cursed sword before the Straw Hats set sail toward the Grand Line. Episode 2, “Good Whale Hunting,” sees the crew ascend Reverse Mountain and encounter Laboon, a giant whale whose tragic past ties back to the Rumbar Pirates. Inside the whale, the Straw Hats meet lighthouse keeper Crocus, who helps guide them toward the Grand Line with a Log Pose. With Nami (Emily Rudd — Fear Street Part Two, Hunters), Sanji (Taz Skylar — Boiling Point, Villain), and Usopp (Jacob Romero Gibson — All Rise, Greenleaf) navigating Baroque Works agents Mr. 9 and Miss Wednesday, Luffy makes an emotional promise to Laboon by painting the Straw Hat jolly roger on the whale’s head. In “Whisky Business,” the Straw Hats arrive at Whisky Peak, where the townspeople throw a celebration that quickly turns sinister when it’s revealed they are all Baroque Works assassins. Zoro single-handedly defeats dozens of bounty hunters, while Miss Wednesday is revealed to be Princess Nefertari Vivi of Alabasta, working undercover alongside Igaram (Mr. 8) to uncover Baroque Works’ role in a looming civil war.
