Its me MT and welcome back to the Heavy Spoilers show! And by popular demand, this is gonna be a breakdown of the 1998 action comedy Small Soldiers! One of my favorite movies from my childhood! So let’s just go ahead and jump into this thing! Small Soldiers was directed by Joe Dante…who famously directed 1984’s Gremlin’s and its 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: Even More Gremlins Than Last Time. After the film was released in theaters on July 10th 1998, it would ultimately not make enough money to earn a profit…raking in 71.8 million dollars on a 40 million dollar budget. And one of the chief factors at blame for the movie’s unfortunate performance was the radical clashing of tones in the film that confused and upset a lot of parents. But what’s super frustrating about that is that it wasn’t Joe Dante’s fault at all for this…but the higher ups that he answered to instead. According to a quote from the director: “Originally I was told to make an edgy picture for teenagers, but when the sponsor tie-ins came in the new mandate was to soften it up as a kiddie movie. Too late, as it turned out, and there are elements of both approaches in there. Just before release it was purged of a lot of action and explosions."
