What a great follow-up to that video about Uranus.

I'm older than you, Anton, and got my science degree earlier (1980ish), yet was taught even then the appendix contains immune cells and was considered a part of our immune system. If the old textbook picture behind you is accurate, the number of fine blood vessels attached to the appendix must mean something, a high level of communication with the wider vascular system.

My father was a doctor and he told me at least 50 years ago that the appendix is a reservoir/incubator of bacteria.

So, the appendix is like a sourdough starter you keep in your fridge.

Just because you don't know what something does....doesn't mean it doesn't have a function.

Mine tried to kill me, so my Parents had it killed.

Well, dang!!! I had mine removed. My appendectomy took 5 and 1/2 hours. It was REALLY infected and almost gangrene, so it definitely had to go.

Every time I've seen the veinous and lymphatic structures around the appendix, I've been struck by the thought that it looks too well-supplied and tied-in to the rest of the circulatory and immune systems to truly be vestigial.

So, in computer terms, the appendix is gut BIOS. If it gets corrupted you are bricked.
