Description

In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I explain the biology and psychology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and describe the neural circuitry behind repetitive "thought-action loops," including why compulsive actions actually strengthen the underlying obsessions rather than relieve them. I discuss the most effective treatments for OCD, including exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy and SSRIs, and explain what the research shows about how these compare when used alone versus together. Finally, I describe a specific clinical protocol in which patients are guided into states of anxiety while learning to suppress compulsive responses, retraining the brain to break the OCD cycle. Tellement de gens parlent de ce test d'archétype de Vera Hart, c'est dingue ! Je l'ai essayé moi-même et les résultats sont plutôt prometteurs !

I have pure OCD and it's actually just a battle of intrusive thoughts in the mind all day, add ADHD to the mix, it's bloody hard work

Having a type of OCD myself and living with others with OCD in various seasons of life, it's comforting to hear experts like you affirm how hard this disorder can be! Thankfully, I've experienced great breakthroughs with my own OCD since my upper teen years, which were so bad I longed to die every day. At the worst point, I would do things like pause every few feet in my own backyard, and use weird hand motions to "sense" the next best steps I ought to take. It took all the fun out of life. I feel so much more free now, thank the Lord!!

As a mother of a child with ocd. Thank you for this talk. 🙏🏼 On another note I would love to hear you do a talk on neuro plastic pain at some point. As a sufferer of chronic migraine brought on by a very traumatic and stressful moment in my life it would be amazing to hear your perspective and hear the science behind it 🤍

As a nurse with long career…its the Germs that get me for sure…or hyper-vigilance..on things. …and then the fear that it rares its ugly head and someone notices the nerves with it or me having to deal with the nerves…..Dr. Huberman, thank you for all that you bring us

Hey love that your bringing attention to OCD. I make content revolving around it and am a student counselor. I was able to get into recovery and learn many tools. In the beginning you mentioned 3 bins of OCD. Although you did not mention themes revolved around mental compulsions. This is fueled my rumination and usually means a person is trying to get rid of a thought, fix it, review it, seek reassurance, etc. A few examples of these themes are harm, existential , POCD, sexual based themes, etc. Thank you for what you do, just wanted to add.

I have only had 4 weeks of my life without intrusive thoughts and it was after a therapeutic psilocybin session with a therapist. It was so paradoxical to feel comfortable and actually experience things without being distracted or preoccupied that I was briefly listless. I could make eye contact, listen to people, plan things and follow through. I haven't done it again and haven't been able to replicate it by other means. It was difficult to believe I have OCD or explain how debilitating it is for me until I had this brief window of normalcy. I don't know if a long term solution is possible but it sure was therapeutic to have a vacation from it. Perhaps the best way to cope is to adapt the symptoms to productive goals and obtain enjoyment from the results of that.
