Description

In this bite-sized bonus Focus Group episode, Sarah Longwell breaks down the political earthquake in Maine after Janet Mills dropped out of the Senate race. Why are Democratic voters rejecting establishment candidates, forgiving scandals that once would’ve been disqualifying, and demanding fighters over polished politicians? I'm 64 and a democrat. I am watching candidates that are young and passionate for the people. Example Jon Ossoff, James Talarico and knows their audience. Winners!

My mom has apparently voted for Susan Collins (who is from the town next door to where I grew up) in the past, which is unfathomable given that my mom is basically an FDR Democrat. Collins has really been skillful at fooling voters into believing she's moderate/nonpartisan by voting with Democrats whenever the Republicans didn't actually need her vote. At least my mom has said she's done with Collins now and won't ever vote for her again.

I grew up in West Virginia under two now-MAGA parents, so I've said things and made "jokes" in my youth that would make me sick today. This was the environment in which I was taught what was "acceptable" and had to unlearn those behaviors and ideologies as my world view expanded. Everything I've heard and seen from Platner in interviews, town halls, etc reminds me of my own journey to becoming a better person. If you've not taken the time to listen to the man talk, I feel you should at least hear what he has to say.

Less of a revolt, more of an awakening.

Schumer DESERVED to be humiliated. After Biden and Trump, he backed a really OLD candidate? That was STUPID.

Maine is a working class state with a few deep pockets of wealth. Unions work there. Graham took it to the people.

Good luck finding a modern candidate who never said anything idiotic online.

I’m from Maine, we’re tired of corporate democrats. We are in exceptional political times! We don’t want a choir boy defending us in a street fight

I think this is one where the voters are out ahead of the political class. Because man, a bad tattoo and ugly comments on reddit from your past are not drunk driving, or abuse, or violence. They're a particular type of mistake that's frankly no where near the egregiousness of what politicians get away with. If that's what Platner is guilty of, he's 100x morally better than Rick Scott or Ted Cruz or pretty much any other Republican politician right now.

To become John Fetterman, he'd have to have a stroke.
