Description

From iPhones and tractors to medical equipment, many products are designed to be unfixable by the average person. Host Roy Wood Jr. sits down with Youtuber and owner of the Rossmann Repair Group, Louis Rossmann, and Law Professor at the University of Michigan, Aaron Perzanowski to discuss how manufacturers limit customer’s repair options, the environmental impact of purchasing new products rather than repairing old ones, why it costs consumer’s more, and how the right to repair movement is hoping to fix this consumer issue. Great subject! I’m a 73 year old that’s seen the introduction of phones into South Georgia and Lordy so many other things. Like color tv and cell phones and computers o my! I spent my first adult working years as an auto mechanic. I’ve been an inventor and prototype/manufacturing engineer. Designed obsolescence seems to have become a common profit motivation. I really appreciate you people who put repair information available to the public🎉

The mentality in the US is that when you break a nail, you're told to buy a new finger.

Right to repair is a huge deal when it comes to durable medical equipment. DME manufacturers have nearly monopolized the market and often use custom parts which you can only obtain through countless hoops of medical documentation an insurance approvals. Meanwhile wheelchair users like myself are left stranded. Paying cash can expedite some of the more common parts but then what’s the point of medical insurance? If it’s a custom parts it often can take months to obtain. Some states have passed right to repair legislation but it still remains a massive issue. I appreciate you highlighting the topic.

what a great topic for everyday consumers. We should be able to repair our devices easily and not have to spend hundreds or thousands for a replacement. Roy Wood Jr. is such a great host.

I bought a refurbished washer and dryer. After 12 years, my dryer stopped spinning so I went to the same store and bought another refurbished dryer. My parents bought brand new washer and dryer with their brand new house. They are on their 3rd washer and dryer and it can't do the heavy duty loads mine can do. Because THE COMPANIES DO NOT WANT THEIR PRODUCTS TO LAST TOO LONG.
