Female Longevity: Optimizing Fitness, Hormones, and Bone Health Post-30

Unlock expert strategies on building muscle as a survival imperative, adjusting female training around menstrual cycles, and protecting against the coming epidemic of bone density loss.

Short Summary

  • Build muscle mass between ages 35–45 while estrogen is high to secure metabolic health and prevent frailty later in life.
  • Prioritize resistance training and high-intensity interval work for metabolic benefits; moderate, continuous training often exacerbates inflammation.
  • Longer, severe caloric restriction or multi-day fasting is generally counterproductive for women compared to men, risking hormonal shutdown.
  • Sleep is the non-negotiable foundation; without adequate recovery, no amount of diet or exercise maximizes body composition change.

This discussion brings together four leading experts—Dr. Mary Claire Haver, Dr. Vonda Wright, Dr. Natalie Crawford, and Dr. Stacy Sims—to systematically address fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle, focusing on the distinct physiological needs of women across their lifespan, especially leading into and through perimenopause. Readers gain clarity on moving past aesthetic goals toward optimizing healthspan using evidence-based training polarization and nutritional timing.

Steven, could you please have a panel conversation that is exclusively about POST-MENOPAUSAL women? So much of this geared to fertility and women in their prime childbearing years, which is fantastic, but we who are beyond those prime years are the people who still seem to be a complete medical mystery, with very little research to draw upon. We are desperate for solid health information. Thank you…I love your podcasts, Steven, because you ask excellent questions and you allow your guests to reply, and you LISTEN. You’re an excellent interviewer!

At 64 I started in a 'Bone Class' that turned out to be straight weightlifting - deadlift, bench and squat. We spend 20mins on each, and the 3-4 of us in each group take turns doing 5 reps at increasing weight. It not just increased what we could lift, we all found our dodgy knees, hips, and shoulders all improved. It's the fastest, and most sociable hour in the week! And, it's great for your brain!! You don't need special clothes, just flat shoes. You never stop increasing the weights you lift. There are women in the class who are in their 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's and they're all lifting serious weights - you're never too old to start!

I don’t think Steven realizes how life changing this information is. This is opening so many doors for women who would otherwise believe what social media is saying and then wonder why they feel horrible. I myself can’t help but tear up hearing exactly what I’ve been needing to hear and it’s so freeing. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

I love how this 20-30-something-year-old is making powerful podcasts for menopausal women! I am so grateful! I've had five children. I felt like pregnancy and birthing info were everywhere. Now, at 55, trying to understand what my body needs, there are so many holes and gaps in the data. Thank you for this!

The weight loss drugs have been life-changing for me after battling for more than 40 years. I take them, but I do the hard work in the gym and with my food choices. I really appreciate the Doctor who jumped in to say that it’s not taking the easy way out. If you’ve ever struggled with your weight, you know how hard it is and it’s not just about having more willpower or making better choices… Or being lazy.
