Critique of Psychiatric Drugs: Side Effects, Overprescription, and Debunked Theories

Understand the documented dangers, side effects, and alleged inefficacy of widely prescribed psychiatric drugs, challenging the industry's foundational claims about mental health.

Short Summary

  • The Covenant shooter was reportedly on five different psychiatric medications, one linked to hostility and mania.
  • Drug company evidence suggesting antidepressants are only marginally better than placebos has allegedly been hidden for decades.
  • The foundational "chemical imbalance" theory for depression is described as a known fiction that Big Pharma profited from promoting.
  • New reports link one specific anti-anxiety drug to nearly 3,400 deaths in Britain over the last five years.

This discussion examines the link between psychotropic medications and destructive behavior, citing recent reports tied to the Covenant school shooting. The host argues that many psychiatric drugs are overprescribed, often without proven efficacy, especially for normal life anxieties. Readers gain insight into why the established justifications for these powerful medications may be structurally flawed or deliberately misrepresented by pharmaceutical interests.

I went to a psychiatrist in 2018 who said there was no such thing as a chemical imbalance. He bluntly asked if I wanted him to refill my meds so I could blame my problems on "disorders" of get off the meds and adjust my own behavior like a grown adult. Long story short, after 6 months weaning off one med at a time, I was fine. Literally fine. All my diagnoses were fabricated, I was simply going through a difficult time in my life. I am forever grateful to this doctor. Interesting note: After a liftime of suffering panic attacks, I started a quality multivitamin and amino acids. Have not had a panic attack since - been 5+ years without ANY anxiety symptoms.

I was prescribed Effexor and lexapro after I had discovered I was an alcoholic and was also addicted to pain medication. I was completely sober but my psychiatrist told me I needed these medications to stay sober. I was newly sober and thought she knew better. I recently weaned off them it’s been 2 months and I still have side effects. I would advise anyone who is considering taking these to do more research I am blessed that I have a relationship with Jesus and I wish so badly I would have leaned into that and never allowed myself to think another drug would be the solution.

I once went to my doctor. He was amazing doctor. I told him I think I needed to be put back on antidepressants. He asked if we could do a blood test first although I hate needles. I told him yes turns out my vitamin D levels were extremely low. So he gave me a prescription for vitamin D and sent me on my way without any of those nasty chemicals. So many doctors are quick to grab the antidepressant prescription pad. I sometimes wonder if they don’t get a kickback for every prescription they write.

Does anyone else remember, like I do, before 1997, they weren't allowed to have ads for prescription drugs on TV? We need to go back to that

I got sucked into the system after my 45 year old husband died. Within a few years I was up to four different medications. And all the side effects that come with it. It took another 3 years for me to get off of all that (against doctors advice). What I really needed was permission to grieve.

When I taught in California, I noticed that normal little boys, (talkative, moving all the time, loud, etc) would eventually go home one day and come back a few weeks later as Zombies. It was alarming how many boys in my class this happened to, after inquiring I would learn from parents that they were called so often at work due to boys' bad behavior in school that the (often single but always working class) mother took them to the doctor and they were prescribed Ritalin for ADHD. No one questioned that there was no recess at my school, or that the kids were liquored up on bad, high sugar foods and asked to sit still all day, or even that the monied kids or two parent-household kids weren't being prescribed this. The teacher (not me so it must have been from the year before) said the kid wasn't behaving, let's medicate him. No one suggested we play outside for an hour everyday and then sit down to learn, which would have addressed some of these problems without medications.

I was going through post partum depression and the lady doctor wanted me to immediately get on medication, I stop seeing her then went to a male therapist who talked me through everything without meds. I also continued to go to mass, open communication with my husband to get out of that mental fog.

We adopted a girl from foster care who was on both Lexapro and boost. When she moved in with us she was severely aggressive and hostile towards us within a year we got her off all the medication. She is now a calm collected sweet girl. With no issues at all. Instead of helping her through the traumatic experiences that she was going through as a child they just put a Band-Aid on it and fed her drugs in reality it made the situation way worse.

My mother ended herself when I was in the 8th grade. She had clinical depression and mania. Her case is part of studies doctors learn from today. I know she was way over medicated, late 90s. I know I have some of that too and have struggled with addiction. But I have a hobby of metal detecting and treasure hunting as a whole. I'm addicted to it, I live for it and dive in every weekend. Sometimes depression will be heavy. But my advice and experience is that the HARDEST part is showering and forcing yourself outside. Get out of the house and away from devices. Once you force yourself outside, in my experience that's 90% of the battle. And the day gets better and better. God bless
