Mastering Communication: Confidence, Clarity, and Spontaneity with Matt Abrahams
Learn evidence-supported protocols to eliminate anxiety, overcome self-judgment, and structure your message so audiences remember what you say. Transform your everyday interactions and high-stakes presentations using frameworks designed by Stanford communication expert, Matt Abrahams.
Short Summary
- Eliminate paralyzing self-judgment by practicing drills that build spontaneity and reduce cognitive load.
- Master message structure using frameworks like "What, So What, Now What" to ensure high information fidelity.
- Reduce filler words by training yourself to "land phrases" at the end of every statement, enforcing natural pauses.
- Recover gracefully from mistakes by learning contingency plans that re-engage the audience instead of apologizing for errors.
- Build instant credibility using "Costco credibility"—demonstrating value through early engagement rather than listing credentials.
This episode details actionable communication science from Matt Abrahams, focusing on moving beyond fear and memorization toward genuine connection and impact. You will gain structured tools for both planned presentations and spontaneous conversations, ensuring your message lands clearly regardless of the setting.

I suffer from public speaking anxiety for years. I learned to calm myself down with mindfulness of breathing as I stand there in front of the people. Instead of trying to not feel anxious, I accepted and embraced it, and let it go through me, then I could be able to give my presentation. Although I finished university this may still come in handy in the future. Very thankful for this episode professor!
This podcast came out 3 days before my first ever presentation in front of one of my prospective supervisors who is highly regarded in our department. I had no choice but to make a good impression. I applied the different techniques learned from this podcast ( deep breath before starting to speak, embrace the anxiety, try to make the presentation as much engaging as possible, stay in the moment, be present, and most importantly PREPARATION). I rehearsed at least three times and when the guest said that you learned so much while editing the slides, this couldn’t be more accurate. I’m not gonna lie, I aced the presentation, I owned everybody in the room. Grateful we still can find some good content on the internet. Thanks to Dr. Huberman for that.
Thank you Andrew- not sure if anyone has said it today but I’m MASSIVELY grateful for you señior- ❤
I’m from Sri Lanka, and I have been following both of you for years. I often told myself, ‘When will these two finally do a podcast together?’ So I’m truly flattered to see you both collaborating on one now🎉🎉🎉
I'm 61 and lost my job. I have over 10 years experience in graphic design.Tons of experience. I freeze up in interviews and can't speak. I've tried memorizing and it's a disaster. I'm finding this fascinating and super helpful. Also love Matt, he's so authentic and speaks so well it's inspiring. Thanks for having him Andrew.
I got to speak at my dad’s funeral, he died shortly after his 99th birthday, and I used several of the techniques you described in this episode. Primarily, I practiced several times and I decided not to use notes. It went very well. Thank you very much for the great content. I very much enjoy your podcasts.
Tongue Twisters are a MUST for very clear speaking! 👌
I used to scroll past comments where people recommended random books, but here I am now doing the same. That’s how much “Glow They Never Saw” by Zael Veynor” impacted me. It’s one of those rare books that doesn’t just give advice - it makes you feel understood and then pushes you to grow.
