Unless you were there at the time, the hype around this film was phenomenal! So many people thought that this was real found documentary footage. One of the best ever experiences in a theater with an audience.
The girl sitting next to me in the theater began to cry midway through and threw up toward the end which really added to my experience of how terrifying the film was
This movie was a flawless capper to the end of pre internet era life too. I remember before the internet growing up with so much urban myth that could not easily be debunked by a click of a button. My older friends constantly cluing me in to old wives tales about murders and hauntings. Then this film comes and just feels like the culmination of all those weird childhood stories I grew up with right on screen.
I went to see it in the theaters. The theater I went to turned out all the lights even the dim isle lights and even though it was winter they had the ac going full on in there. So anytime the screen went black the theater was so dark you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face and you were freezing just like they were. It was an amazing immersive experience.
Not showing the witch was the best decision they ever made. This movie still haunts me at 33 years old.
This movie was way ahead of it’s time. Brilliantly done. No fancy CGI fairly unknown actors internet was fairly new at the time, few people had it. The marketing for this movie was amazing. Great acting. It will never be replicated today. It’s a masterpiece for it’s time

Oh gawd, Heather screaming "MIIIKE!!!" at the end gives me chills and tears. Her voice cracking, you can hear the fear within her. Fan-freaking-tastic acting 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I seem to recall the directors giving intentionally contradictory notes to the actors at different times. First, Heather would get a note saying something like "you're in charge now - take control of the group and lead them [wherever]. Meanwhile, they would pass Josh a note saying "you guys are running out of food...take charge and make a decision regarding what the group should do." Cold-blooded but also hilarious, this was a pretty awesome way for the directors to wind all three of them up and ensure drama.
The part when the tent starts shaking and you hear the voices on the outside of the tent scarred me for life.
