THIS IS THE END (2013) IS F***ING BONKERS!! MOVIE REACTION!! Seth Rogen | Danny McBride
Reel Rejects Review: Reacting to Seth Rogen’s Apocalyptic Comedy, This Is The End
Revisit the self-parodying, genre-bending horror-comedy This Is The End to see how its raunchy humor and celebrity carnage hold up years later. Understand which performances still resonate and why this friends' project remains a unique cinematic event.
Short Summary
- Michael Cera’s shocking early exit and Danny McBride’s descent into anarchy defined the film's most memorable early moments.
- The review contrasts the shared absurdity of the apocalypse (the Rapture) with genuine conflicts among the trapped celebrities, particularly surrounding resources like the Milky Way candy bar.
- Seth and Jay’s friendship arc provides necessary pathos amidst the chaos, culminating in difficult choices regarding salvation.
- The hosts agree the movie captures the fun, audacious energy of friends collaborating, even if some of the extreme humor feels dated.
This analysis breaks down the opening party sequence, the group’s reaction to the literal End of Days, and the subsequent survival efforts inside James Franco's mansion. Readers gain insight into which celebrity portrayals landed best and the overall lasting impact of this cult comedy hybrid.

This is literally one of my all time favorite comedies. Definitely my favorite Seth Rogen & James Franco collab. Just love the concept of the celebrities playing exaggerated versions of themselves during a disaster type situation.
Coked up Michael Cera was the most hilarious part of the movie lmao
Rumor has it: Paul Rudd is still running around with that giant bottle of champagne.
1:03:19. Fun fact: Originally the movie ended with Seth & Jay ascending to Heaven, but the film ends with the flash of light then showing the credits. Well, test audiences hated that there was no Heaven scene, so the cast & crew got back together & added the final 5 minutes of the movie at the last second. Also, getting the Backstreet Boys to all be in this movie was a surprise to some of the cast & crew (including Jay) since they only recently got back together to tour as a band again.
This is the 'Endgame' of Apatow's Rogenberg-verse.
One of the funniest comedies I've seen in recent memory. Nothing came close after it for me. This to me was the last hurrah of the golden age of blockbuster comedies.
This one of my favorite movies ever. There were almost no trailers for it, so when my friends and I went to go see it, we figured it was just another Seth Rogen comedy. When people started being beamed up, and then Emma Watson came in, we were like “THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE”
I like that James Franco unknowingly prophesies his death in the scene where he and Seth are talking about the Idea for Pineapple Express 2. He mentions that he's going to sacrifice himself, leading to Danny McBride eating him, and that's exactly what happens
When I saw this in theaters I was on the floor crying. At the time in all these guys careers, there couldn’t have been a more perfect comedy that captured each of these guys public perceptions and played on them perfectly
